Legislative Awareness and Advocacy

Zonta International, its districts and its clubs are urged to express themselves about and become involved in issues which:

  • Improve the legal, political, economic, education, health and professional status of women
  • Advance understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of executives in business and the profession
  • Promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms

In other words, as Zontians we support improving the status of women and women's human rights and advocate to influence the laws and attitudes that affect women's lives at the club, district and international levels.

For the biennium of 2010-2012 our district 5 Governor, Pat Roby, has given all of the District 5 clubs a goal of expanding our advocacy knowledge and creating a program for sustained advocacy within the Zonta International guidelines and policies.

The Zonta Club of Columbus has a Legislative Awareness and Advocacy Committee. The committee keeps the members informed of legislative activities and encourages involvement of all club members.

For example, did you know that the state of Ohio is a hub for Human Trafficking? Zonta Club of Columbus has been a local proponent creating awareness of this ever growing travesty. We advocate and create awareness by educating the community as well as having a designated Zontian that serves on the Ohio Attorney General's Task Force Against Human Trafficking.

Currently we also participate in the S.O.A.P. (Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution) Project.

Want to know more? We encourage you to join us at one of our monthly club meetings!
