Alaska “Voyage of the Glaciers” proves to be an exciting Fundraiser

September 9 – 21, 2011

Zontians, friends and family described the Alaska Cruise Tour as an “experience of a lifetime”!The five day land tour by bus and train began early on the first day in Fairbanks where they took a relaxing riverboat cruise down the Chena River.  They enjoyed a fascinating visit to an Indian Village where they learned how salmon was dried and used as the staple food to survive the long cold Alaska winters. Looking for wildlife, enjoying the beautiful scenery and and petting the sled dogs were the highlights at Denali National Park.  The panoramic mountain views at Mount McKinley were truly breathtaking!  The Zonta tour was one of the lucky thirty percent of the visitors to actually see the peak at Mount McKinley.

Throughout the entire trip, whether on a bus, train or tour, experienced tour guides shared interesting information on our surroundings.  They enjoyed taking photographs of the beautiful scenery around and out the overhead windows on the Princess Express railway which took the Zonta travelers to the ship at Whittier.  It was one of the few cold and rainy days.

The Island Princess is a beautiful cruise ship with gourmet food, a multitude of shows and entertainment.  Breathtaking views of Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay National Park from the ship were a highlight of the cruise for everyone.

While at the ports of Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan, the travelers did not rest!  Shopping for Alaskan treasures was especially fun due to the end of the season bargains!  Exciting excursions by some of the travelers included an unforgettable plane ride around Mount McKinley, (North America’s highest peak), panning for gold, zip line adventure, hiking, riding the White Pass Scenic Railway to the Yukon, exciting whale watching, a thrilling helicopter ride which landed on Mendenhall Glacier, a trip on the Bering Sea on the boat of the “Deadliest Catch”, season II.  One traveler caught a 13.5 pound silver salmon….which was prepared by the chef on the ship for the Zonta travelers to enjoy!   Others even went to the North Pole!

This wonderful cruise tour was arranged by Patti Cash and her expert staff of Magic Cruises.  Zonta travelers included Nancy Atcheson, Shirlyn Chaffin, Laural Flanagan, Margot Hoffman, Chris Jackson, Norma Sexton, and Jan Wilhelm.
